BENTON COUNTY is to have a

new county judge next year. Gary

Black’s decision to retire after this term has brought out a large field of candidates to succeed him—five in the Republican primary alone. Happily for the county’s voters, there’s an obvious choice in the GOP race: Dave Bisbee, the term-limited state senator from Rogers.

Senator Bisbee would bring a lot of governmental knowledge and experience to the job of county judge. He served three terms in the House of Representatives and has been a senator since 1999. He’s got a reputation as a legislator who does his homework, who comes prepared to meetings, and who’s able to work effectively with those on both sides of the aisle.

Mr. Bisbee has made himself an expert on the state budget and on education, two of the most complicated subjects legislators have had to address in recent sessions. His ability to master the details of goverment work—especially budgets—would serve him well as a county administrator. In turn, his proven skills would work well for all the people of Benton County.

There’s a precedent for a move from the Legislature to county government. Over in Washington County, Jerry Hunton served as a state representative for years before winning election as county judge. Judge Hunton, who’s stepping down after his latest term, used his legislative experience and considerable political talents to make himself an effective county judge. Dave Bisbee could do much the same for Benton County.

Senator Bisbee’s ability to reach compromises across party lines in the Legislature is notable. So much so that he’s been as well regarded by Democrats as by his fellow Republicans. In some cases, members of his party have even regarded him as not partisan enough to suit them. But that criticism is actually a compliment. He’s just got a knack for getting things done without worrying about party labels.

The job of Benton County judge is notoriously difficult. The county judge is often the focal point of complaints by all those who aren’t satisfied with road work or some other aspect of county government. He’s the county official with a high profile, and he’ll always be on the receiving end of criticism. So why would Dave Bisbee want the job after surviving the perils of the state Capitol ? To quote the candidate: “I just want to provide leadership.”

Lots of candidates have spoken similar words in the past. Dave Bisbee backs up his words with a solid record of accomplishment. Benton County would benefit from his continued public service.
