Make Fido a meatloaf or feed him beans and rice. Turn your old jeans into a bed for your buddy. Those are projects featured in the just-published Eco Dog: Healthy Living for Your Pet (Chronicle Books, $ 17 ) by Corbett Marshall and Jim Deskevich.
Eco Dog covers grooming, pest control, homemade house-cleaning products, nutrition, recipes and crafts.
Here is a smattering of ideas from Eco Dog: Once a month, make an herbal flea repellent by covering 1 teaspoon of dried rosemary with 1 pint of boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes. Strain out the rosemary and let the liquid cool to body temperature. Pour it over your dog as his final rinse after his bath.
Create a dog toy out of recycled materials. Cut a T-shirt into strips, braid it and knot the ends. Fleas can breed in your dog’s favorite sleeping spot in the yard. If it is worn down without grass, you can cover the area with black plastic for a few days. The heat underneath will kill fleas and larvae.
