100 YEARS AGO May 12, 1908 Acting Governor Allen Hamiter issued a call for a special session of the state legislature. He calls the legislature for the purpose of taking up the matter of completing the new state capitol and also to arrange for the monthly payment of state tax money into the general revenue fund. Hamiter and his friends claim that Acting Gov. Pindall, who is now in Washington, D. C., and whose place as governor of Arkansas was assumed by Hamiter during his absence from the state, cannot revoke the call for the special session, and that nothing can prevent the session.
50 YEARS AGO May 12, 1958 Two Negro attorneys for plaintiffs in the Little Rock school integration case have filed a series of questions for the officials of the Little Rock School District to answer in a 15-day period. The attorneys are Wiley A. Branton, Pine Bluff, and Thurgood Marshall, New York, who represent the 33 Negro plaintiffs objecting to the gradual integration plan as well as the eight Negro youths enrolled in Central High School.
25 YEARS AGO May 12, 1983 Gov. Bill Clinton has turned down the request from state Representative Grover Richardson that he appoint a task force to study the needs of blacks. In a letter hand-delivered to Richardson by Bob Nash, a black aide to Mr. Clinton, the governor said the needs of blacks are wellknown and well-documented. “We don’t need more studies. We need action and results to help improve long-standing problems,” Mr. Clinton’s letter said.
10 YEARS AGO May 12, 1998 With the Democratic primary for U. S. senator drawing nigh, candidates grew more critical of one another Monday. Two described another — Blanche Lincoln of Horseshoe Lake — as a defender of the tobacco industry. She said she didn’t like their accusations. Candidates Scott Ferguson of West Memphis and Nate Coulter of Little Rock criticized Lincoln, a former congressman, for taking campaign contributions in 1994 and 1996 from tobacco interests.
