Celebrations planned to honor King
The Northwest Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr. Committee has planned a series of events to celebrate the civil rights leader's birthday and honor his legacy.
Events begin with the dedication of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at 3 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Razorback Road and West Sixth Street. During the ceremony, the city of Fayetteville and the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department will formally rename West Sixth Street.
The group, along with Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, will host a community service project to help elderly Northwest Arkansas residents at 9 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers are asked to meet at St. James Church, 115 S. Willow St. in Fayetteville.
A service of praise and reflection will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at Sequoyah United Methodist Church, 1910 N. Old Wire Road, in Fayetteville.
Alpha Phi Alpha and the Martin Luther King Committee will host a memorial service for King at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. James Baptist Church.
A youth prayer service will begin events Monday at 8 a.m. at the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House on the University of Arkansas campus, followed by youth activities at the HPER building at 9:30 a.m. The events are designed to bring children and teens together to reflect on the meaning of King's life and legacy.
The annual Martin Luther King Jr. city awards and march to the Arkansas Union will begin at 11:15 a.m. in the Walton Arts Center parking lot in Fayetteville, to be followed by a vigil at the union's Connections Lounge at noon. Events culminate with the 13th annual Recommitment Banquet at 7 p.m. at the Fayetteville Town Center. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students. The event will feature guest speaker Gene C. Young. The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships will be awarded, and local leaders will be recognized for outstanding community service.
