SPRINGDALE — A dozen volunteers for Washington Regional Medical Center’s Cancer Support Home were recognized for their service and dedication to the organization at a volunteer appreciation dinner April 29 at the Springdale Holiday Inn.
Two of the volunteers, Kim Emerson and Marge Miller, were given certificates for serving more than 1, 000 hours each. Both worked in the Bentonville location of the cancer support house. Past volunteers who were honored for achieving this milestone are Nina Luther and Jenny Coogan.
Cancer Support Home manager Gina Maddox gave certificates to all volunteers from the Fayetteville and Bentonville locations. Those recognized for one or more years of service were Emerson, Miller, Luther, Coogan, Pat Owens, Amy Berenbrok, Mary Bublitz, Mary Harreld, Edith Garland, Lindsay Baker, Bertha Vineta and Lorena Ellett. Each also received a Bluebird of Happiness, a glass sculpture handmade by professionals at Terra Studios. Volunteers who are also breast cancer survivors received a similar Pink Bird of Hope. A portion of proceeds from the pink birds goes to the Ozark affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The Cancer Support Home offers free services including classes and seminars, counseling for children, guest rooms for families of cancer patients, mastectomy supplies, a resource library, screenings, support groups and a wig boutique. In 2007, more than 1, 900 people used the support services and more than 1, 177 Northwest Arkansas residents received free cancer screenings.
For the dinner, the hotel catered a menu of salad, lasagna and garlic bread. Cake was provided by Shelby Lynn’s Cake Shoppe in Springdale.
