FAYETTEVILLE — Tears of laughter during intermission were replaced by tears of sadness at the end of My Father’s War, a TheatreSquared play recalling stories of a World War II veteran, Arthur Herzberg, acted out by his daughter, actress and TheatreSquared co-founder Amy Herzberg.
The two-hour show, written by Amy’s playwright husband and TheatreSquared co-founder Bob Ford, opened to favorable reviews from its first public audience the night of May 2 at Nadine Baum Studios. Guests included Herzberg’s father and mother, Florence Herzberg, who live in Phoenix. The cast also includes Abbey Molyneux, Kris Stoker, Jason Engstrom and Justin Scheuer. Alice Jankell of New York, formerly of Fayetteville, directed.
An afterparty was held opening night in the lobby of Baum Studios. David Lewis from the Brick House Kitchen provided lemon-curd cake, bittersweet chocolate custard with apricots in lavender and prunes in cognac, cinnamon walnut cookies, chocolate walnut meringues and a collection of cheeses from Europe.
TheatreSquared is the area’s only professional theater company. My Father’s War continues with performances at 2 p. m. today and May 18 and at 8 p. m. Thursday-Saturday.
