FOOTBALL Arkansas State RB Brown suspended Arkansas State Coach Steve Roberts announced Thursday that sophomore running back Preston Brown has been suspended indefinitely from the team while facts are gathered surrounding a violation of team rules. “I am aware of the situation with Preston Brown and once all the facts have been gathered, we will move forward accordingly and a final decision on his status as a member of the ASU football team will be made,” Roberts said. Brown played in 10 games last season as a redshirt freshman, rushing for 298 yards and a touchdown on 54 carries. Brown also made 20 receptions for 192 yards and another touchdown. UA’s Ward attending minority coaches forum Arkansas cornerbacks coach Lorenzo Ward is among approximately 40 coaches, athletic directors and conference commissioners attending the 2008 Minority Coaches Forum in Phoenix this week. Ward is one of four coaches from SEC schools in attendance, including Mississippi State Coach Sylvester Croom and defensive coordinator Charlie Harbison and Alabama assistant Burton Burns. Luigs on Rimington watch list Arkansas senior Jonathan Luigs won the Rimington Trophy last season as the nation’s top center, so it’s no surprise he’s among 42 players on the watch list for the 2008 award. LSU center Brett Helms, a senior from Stuttgart, also is on the list. Bledsoe, Green Bay on hold Former Arkansas defensive tackle Fred Bledsoe, who hopes to get in camp with the Green Bay Packers, is scheduled for arthroscopic surgery on his ankle Monday. A magnetic resonance imaging in Green Bay, Wis., revealed the ankle injury. The Packers are considering having Bledsoe back in camp after his rehabilitation. Bledsoe (Little Rock Central ), 22, had 36 tackles and a quarterback hurry last season, and was credited with a safety in the Razorbacks’ 42-29 loss to Kentucky.

GOLF Arkansas fourth at NCAA regional Arkansas senior Stacy Lewis fired a 3-under-par 69 Thursday, leading the seventh-ranked Lady Razorback into fourth place after the first round of the NCAA West Regional in Sacramento, Calif. Lewis played the front nine 2 under with birdies on Nos. 1 and 7 and added a final birdie on No. 16 in a nearly flawless round at Lincoln Hills Golf Club. She is tied for third. Arkansas finished the day at 3-over 291. Second-ranked Southern California leads the tournament at 283, followed by No. 28 Tulsa at 287. UNLV is third at 288, and No. 14 Oklahoma State is fifth at 293. The top eight teams from the regional advance to the NCAA Championship in Albuquerque, N. M., on May 20-24. Arkansas sophomore Kristin Ingram is tied for 25 th with a 1-over 73, while junior Lucy Nunn is tied for 39 th at 74. Freshman Kelli Shean is tied for 47 th with a 75, and sophomore Alex Schulte rounds out Arkansas’ scores with an 80, tied for 94 th. Wikstrom tied for 57 th in NCAAs UALR’s Sara Wikstrom, one of nine players to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Central Regional, is tied for 57 th after the first round Thursday in Austin, Texas. Wikstrom shot a 5-over-par 77, and trails leader Maria Jose Uribe of UCLA by 12 strokes. Chavez makes inaugural All-Freshman team Arkansas’ Sam Chavez has been named to the SEC’s first All-Freshman Team in the sport. Chavez was in the UA lineup for the final seven events of the regular season and had three top-20 finishes, including a best of second place.

BASEBALL Arkansas-Fort Smith loses regional opener Arkansas-Fort Smith lost 14-4 to Connors State in Thursday’s opener of the NJCAA Region II tournament in Bartlesville, Okla. The Lions (40-17 ) play at noon today in an elimination game. Arkansas-Fort Smith was hurt by two big innings by Connors State (41-16 ), which scored five runs against starter Aaron Davidson in the fifth and four against Drew Babcock in the sixth. The Lions had led 4-2 going into the bottom of the fifth after a home run by Adam Robertson of Rosebud and RBI single by Joey Winiecki of Bryant.
