HIGH SCHOOL STATE TRACK AND FIELD MEETS : Mansfield, Prescott repeat as expected

PRESCOTT — There were no surprises in the Class 3 A state track and field meet Tuesday at Cummins Stadium.

Prescott’s boys and Mansfield’s girls easily defended their state championships.

Prescott’s boys finished 117. 50 points. England finished second with 73. 50.

It was Prescott’s fifth state championship recognized by the Arkansas Activities Association.

The Curley Wolves were also state champions in 1986, 1989 and 1992.

Mansfield’s girls, who also won the Arkansas Track Coaches Association indoor state title this year, finished with 176 points. Green Forest was second with 83.

The Prescott boys won seven events.

Senior Tony Gillard of Prescott broke his own Class 3 A record in the high jump with a leap of 6-4. Gillard set the record last year (6-0 ).

Senior Ray Smith broke his own Class 3 A record in the triple jump to lead a 1-2-3 finish for Prescott. Smith’s jump of 45-1. 50 shattered his previous record (42-7 ), which he set last year.

B. J. Haynie set a meet record in the long jump (22-4. 50 ). Micah McCoy also won the 110 high hurdles (15. 53 ).

In the only afternoon running final, Prescott’s 3, 200-meter relay team of Chris Smith, Gaven Bostic, Zayne Otwell and Trent Barrow set a Class 3 A record (8: 46. 60 ).

Lake Village set the previous record (8: 56. 51 ) last year.

Prescott also won the 400 relay (44. 42 ) and 1, 600 relay (3: 36. 65 ).

Mansfield’s girls were led by sophomore sprinter Cara Ellingburg, who broke her own Class 3 A records in winning the 100 (12. 43 ) and 200 (26. 04 ).

Mansfield sophomore Jessica Otto also won the high jump with a meet record (5-2 ).

Mansfield junior Kelsey Edwards won the shot put (35-4 ) and discus (103-7 ).

CLASS 1 A Acorn, Trinity Christian win ACORN — Acorn successfully defending its Class 1 A boys state track and field championship Tuesday afternoon. Acorn finished with 138 points to easily outdistance runner-up Omaha’s 63. 50. Acorn also won state cross country titles in 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2001. In the girls’ division, Texarkana Trinity Christian won the team championship with 99 points, four more than defending champion Guy-Perkins. Armorel was third with 87 points. Thomas Michaux of Acorn won the 400 (54. 91 ) and long jump (19-11. 25 ). Acorn also won the 400 relay (47. 93 ) and 3, 200 relay (8: 59. 77 ).
