Fitness Summit Jean-Paul Francoeur is hosting the JP Fitness Summit 2008 at his fi tness center in downtown Little Rock from May 30 to June 1. Celebrity speakers include Alan Aragon and Steve Cotter. Aragon will speak on “Frequently Asked Questions in Sports Nutrition.” With a master’s degree in nutrition, Aragon is a nutrition research consultant and a columnist for Men’s Health magazine. He is a continuing education provider for the Commission on Dietetic Registration, National Academy of Sports Medicine, American Council on Exercise and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He has a private practice designing programs for recreational and professional athletes, including professional sports teams. Cotter will present “Comprehensive Mind Body Fitness and Wellness Through Kettlebell and Qigong.” A martial arts and strength and conditioning specialist, he creates strength-training DVDs, including the Encyclopedia of Kettlebell Lifting series. He is a two-time U. S. national full contact kuoshu (kung fu ) champion with 25 years of training. He directs the International Kettlebell and Fitness Federation. New hours The Jones Center for Families in Springdale has switched to a summer recreation schedule. Hours are new for open pool and lap swimming, public ice skating and curling, broomball and gym use. The hours are available at (479 ) 756-8090 and www. jonesnet. org.

Du for the Parks A running-and-biking race on Memorial Day will raise money to help Hot Springs develop the Hot Springs Creek Greenway Trail. Sponsored by Hot Springs Friends of the Park, the annual Du for the Parks is also an Arkansas State Championship duathlon. It challenges athletes to run two miles, bike 12 miles and then run another two miles. The race will begin at 8: 30 a.m. May 26. A children’s duathlon will follow at 11. Registration costs $ 45 ($ 75 for a two-person relay team ) until May 19; thereafter the fee rises $ 10. Racers must also have a membership in USA Triathlon or buy a one-day permit for $ 10. The Kids Du costs $ 10 plus a $ 5 children’s membership in USA Triathlon. Although the event is chiptimed, race-day registration will be accepted from 6: 45 to 8 a.m. near the starting line at the Transportation Depot, 100 Broadway Terrace. Lions run The Fayetteville Lions Club will conduct its fifth annual Challenge for Sight 5 K Run / Walk at 7: 30 a.m. May 24 around Vandergriff Elementary School in Fayetteville. The 3. 1-mile event raises money to help blind and visually impaired people in Northwest Arkansas and diabetes awareness. The school is at 2975 E.
