Much has been made this election season of whether the county tax collector should have an accounting background.

While we think experience in accounting is a valuable asset for a tax collector to have, this is, first and foremost, an administrative position. Even more important than raw numbers-crunching experience, in our estimation, is the ability to bring stability, accountability, and an expectation of professionalism to the office.

In short, a steady, experienced hand is needed, and that’s why we’re endorsing Gloria Peterson for tax collector. She can provide the leadership this office needs.

Peterson brings a wealth of hands-on experience to the race. She worked in the Tax Assessor’s Office for nine years before being elected county treasurer in 1985.

In 2003, Peterson retired after serving as treasurer for 18 years — only to be called back into service when the county suddenly found itself without a tax collector. She held the position of tax collector for 14 months.

Peterson’s opponent, Tracy Sewell, has a stronger accounting background, but she doesn’t instill the same level of confidence as a leader and administrator — and right now, that’s what this office needs. Peterson has our support.
