BENTONVILLE — There’s a rain delay at the ball fields in Bentonville. It’s not forcing sports fans to stay home instead of heading out to the game — but it is keeping the new concession stand from opening.

Natural Builders is currently constructing a new concession and restroom building at Memorial Park to replace the old ones. But because of significant amounts of rain during the spring, Natural Builders is asking for 15 extra days to the contract time for the $ 529, 000 building.

But City Engineer Travis Whitlock wants the contractor to have a different option, since any delays would push back the opening of the new building until June.

“ Instead of giving them the extra days, I would like to propose that a bonus of $ 20, 000 be given only if they can complete the project by May 22, ” Whitlock wrote in a memo to the Bentonville City Council, which would vote on this measure at its meeting Tuesday. This would mean the new concession stand would be ready before the Memorial Day Baseball tournament.

According to the agreement, if the concession stand is not completed by the date, the bonus will not be paid and the extra days will be given.

Money for the bonus would come from Parks Department bond money.

On Monday, the City Council will hold a meeting as a committee of the whole to discuss plans for the proposed community center to be constructed in Southwest Bentonville.

City Planning Services Manager Shelli Rushing is also scheduled to make a presentation on citywide commercial design standards.

Both meetings will be held at 6 p. m. Monday and Tuesday at the Community Development Building, 305 S. W. A St.
