BENTON COUNTY - Maj. Jeff Smith of the Civil Air Patrol's 115 th Composite Squadron in Rogers received a Meritorious Service Award at the Southwest Region Conference recently in Midwest City, Okla.

National Commander Maj. Gen. Amy Courter, National Vice Commander Brig. Gen. Reggie Chitwood of Van Buren and Southwest Region Commander Col. Joseph Jensen of Little Rock presented Smith with the award for his service as leader of the 2008 Southwest Region Color Guard.

The color guard, formed with cadets of the 115 th Composite Squadron under Smith's leadership, won the Arkansas Wing Color Guard Competition in February before securing the Southwest Region title the following month. The color guard then traveled to Dayton, Ohio, in June for the National Color Guard Competition and placed first in the in-rank inspection event and second in the indoor standard drill event. One team member also won the female Fleet Foot Award for turning in the fastest time in the mile run.

The team trained in drill and flag presentations, inspections, written testing, verbal quizzing and mile runs two to three times per week for nine months. The 115 th's commanding officer, Lt. Col. Max Gore, said of Smith: "He took four young cadets and molded them into an awesome and precise color guard team, worthy at any level of competition. His efforts exemplify the highest tradition of teamwork."

The squadron meets at 7 p.m. Tuesdays at the Rogers Municipal Airport's Hangar No. 7, next to Wal-Mart Aviation. Visitors are invited.
