PRAIRIE GROVE — What was a pitcher’s duel for the first four innings quickly became an offensive showcase for both Gravette and Union Christian in the final three innings of Tuesday’s championship game of the Class 4 A North Region Baseball
Tournament Gravette (21-8 ) tallied three runs in the fifth as Manny Rogers stole home and Quinten Eden delivered a two-run triple. The Eagles retaliated with a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth to take the title in a 4-3 victory.
“ We thought we were getting ready to get a roll going, ” Gravette coach Vernon Scott said.
“ Hat’s off to their pitcher [Kyle Mathis ]. They got five good innings out of him. ”
Casey Mikula, the Eagles’ ace, came on in relief and nailed down the final two innings.
“ I knew we would see Mikula when they got the lead, ” Scott said. “ He came in and nailed the door shut on us. As I’ve said all year long, the team in the conference that has concerned me the most is Union Christian. ”
Hayden Przybsyz plated a pair of runs for UCA (20-11 ) with a single in the fifth. Tyler Clark singled in a run in the sixth and Dawson Urrutia did the same later in the inning for the win.
