HIGHFILL - Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport will get a $ 654, 089 grant from the U. S. Department of Transportation, U. S. Sens. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., and Mark Pryor, D-Ark., and U. S. Rep. John Boozman, R-Ark., said in a joint news release.

The money will be used to expand the existing Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Building to accommodate required safety equipment, the legislators said in Tuesday's release.

The equipment will help ensure the safety of travelers, Lincoln said.

"Northwest Arkansas continues to see increased air travel for business and leisure. This funding will help ensure the safety of every air passenger who travels through Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport, providing airport staff with the equipment they need to effectively respond to emergencies," she said.

As the airport has grown over the years, passenger safety has remained its focus, and the grant will help it keep that focus, Boozman said.

Reinvesting federal money to promote safety is a good idea, Pryor said.
