Marmaduke upends ’Hawks in extra innings

SEARCY — Marmaduke finally put its foot down in a see-saw affair late Friday night with a run in the bottom of the eighth to log a 4-3 win against Pea Ridge in the first round of the Class 3 A State Baseball Tournament at Jerry Moore Field on the campus of Harding University in Searcy.

An error in the eighth spelled doom for the Blackhawks. A booted ground ball at shortstop set up Marmaduke’s Trent Smith, who hammered an RBI double to drive in the game-winner.

Marmaduke (14-8 ) advances to face Mayflower today in the quarterfinal round at 2: 30 p. m.

Pea Ridge (16-7 ) took a 1-0 lead on the third. Corey Trevathan reach on a dropped fly ball in right and scored when Randon Webb looped a single to center.

Marmaduke loaded the bases in the bottom of the third with no outs but could squeeze just one run out of it. The Greyhounds got a pair of walks and a single by Ray Taylor to pack the sacks. One run scored on a double-play attempt at first following a force out at home on a comebacker. The throw from home bounced into right field, allowing the run to score.

Pea Ridge shoved ahead 3-1 with a two-run fifth. An error at third and a hit batter set up Dustin Woodward, who reached on another error at third to score one. Webb plated the second tally on a ground ball to second.

Marmaduke rallied to tie in the sixth. Consecutive one-out singles by Dexter Jordan and Zac Traylor sparked the surge. Andrew Dulaney bumped an infield single to second but an error on the throw to first plated a pair of runs. Lady Blackhawks 10, Lady Bearcats 2 PINE BLUFF — Morgan Marble went 4 for 5 with a double to lead Pea Ridge (19-11 ) to a win Friday against Brookland (17-11 ) at the Class 3 A State Softball Tournament in Pine Bluff. Kayla Bangs and Brittany Higgins each went 2 for 4 with a double for the Lady Blackhawks. Bangs drove in a pair of runs to put Pea Ridge ahead 2-1 in the third and Brookland never led after that. The Lady Blackhawks added 4 runs in the fourth and 3 in the sixth to stretch the lead. They play in the quarterfinals today at 1: 45 p. m. against Smackover.
