State track meets for Class 4A, 5A held today

BENTON COUNTY — Track and field teams from both Gentry and Gravette will send several athletes to today’s Class 4 A State Meet at Nashville High School.
Competition begins at 11 a. m. Running finals will start at 6: 30 p. m.
Gravette’s boys and girls both won team titles at the 1-4 A Conference Meet at Gravette High School on May 1. The Lions are led by senior Frankie Walburn and sophomore Michael Croasdell, both qualified for three events today.
Walburn will run the 100, 200 and triple jump while Croasdell will run the 100, 200 and long jump. Croasdell is the conference champion in the 100 (111. 09 seconds ) and Walburn is the league champ in the 200 (23. 51 ).
Others qualified today are Garrett August (800 ), Cody Bullock (110-meter hurdles ), Ron Jarvis (shot put ) and John Stay (discus ). Jarvis won the 1-4 A title with a throw of 40 feet.
The Lions’ conference runner-up relay teams in the 1, 600 and 3, 200 are also entered.
The Lady Lions are led today by a freshman. Shelby Newell won highpoint honors at the 1-4 A meet after winning the 400 (1: 07. 21 ), the long jump (15-0 ) and the triple jump (35-5. 5 ). She’ll compete in those three events today.
Others representing the Gravette girls’ team today are Taylor Kean (100 hurdles ), Kaleigh Duncan (300 hurdles ), Richelle Bonneville (high jump ) and Megan Galvan (discus ). The Lady Lions will also relay teams in the 400 and 1600. Gentry
The Lady Pioneers will send three conference champions to today’s state meet. Jade Shawver (300 hurdles ), Justine Newlun (800 ) and Kendra McClain (shot put ) all won their events at the 1-4 A meet.
Carol Casebeer (triple jump ) is also competing today as are relay teams in the 3, 200 and 1, 600.
Caleb Jech cleared a height of 6-4 to tie for first in the high jump event at conference and qualify for today’s meet. Others competing today for the Pioneers include Josh Holland (300 hurdles ), Nick Weeks (shot putt ) and Tucker Lewis (pole vault ).
The winner of each state meet in each event and the five top times from any classification qualify for the Meet of Champs at Lake Hamilton on May 21. Siloam Springs
Six Lady Panthers qualified for the state meet in Paragould after finishing second at the 5 A-West Conference meet last week at Hendrix College in Conway.
They were led by a pair of firstplace finishes from sophomore runner Rachel Hill in the 3, 200-meter run and freshman Lizzy Briones in the long jump.
Both relay teams placed second at the conference meet behind Vilonia (1, 600 ) and Alma (400 ).
The 1, 600-meter relay team (Madison Alexander, Allie Jones, Shelby Ferguson and Briones ) ran a time of 4 minutes, 32. 07 seconds, while the same quartet ran a time of 53. 88 in the 400-meter relay.
