Look to Your Library : A wrap-up on the Western Roundup

Marianne Farner

The board, staff and volunteers of Bella Vista Library are still bubbling over the success of our Western Roundup, held Sept. 19. While raising much-needed funds for the library, it also provided a lot of fun and great dining for all who came. Marilyn Pearson has my total gratitude, because as fundraising chair, she spearheaded the whole thing. Marilyn’s great know-how and organizational skills served us well. I am in awe of board chair Jim Nemecek, who was responsible for the great food. How many men do you know who can and will plan a menu, purchase all the food, supervise a cadre of preparers, cook all the meat, transport and serve, all done in shorts and a cute bandana-pattern chef hat! - Wednesday, October 1, 2008

What’s Cookin’ ? : Ulmet makes time for family, friends — even 4-legged kind

Jane Robshaw

Early on a recent morning, Sharon Ulmet received a call from a fellow animal lover who had found an injured kitten on the edge of U.S. Highway 71. Sharon arrived on the scene, wrapped up the animal and took it to the Bella Vista Animal Shelter. Although the kitty was badly injured and might not survive, she felt it should be treated with care and not just left by the side of the road. (Note: After treatment by a local veterinarian the kitty is doing just great.) This is not an unusual beginning of the day for “Auntie Sharon.” (This is how she refers to herself to the many, many animal friends in the village she befriends and nurtures). Sharon and her husband Clark have two dogs, Nessi and Missy, and two cats, Prissi and Boudreaux — all rescued animals. They live a hectic life together in a lovely home filled with the best cooking equipment, numerous refrigerators and freezers, many antiques and a plant room where summer vegetable plants get a head start for the large, raised gardens. - Wednesday, October 1, 2008
