Landscaping project getting underway

DECATUR ñ The Decatur Chamber of Commerce, at Mondayís meeting, voted to donate $ 500 for a project to landscape the Northside Elementary School grounds and improve the playground area.
A group of community members, organized by Pat Austin, have come together to work on the project. They hope to enhance the school by adding trees, walkways and outdoor classrooms.
The project, still in the preliminary stages, is being planned in steps, and a professional landscape architect is laying out the design. Kindergarten teacher Leslie Thompson said the first part of the project is to buy and plant trees. Thompson said it is important for the trees to be in the ground for six months before cold weather sets in.
The group is working with the county extension office and will be applying for several grants to help fund the project.
Contributions from community members are welcome. Donations can be made through the Decatur Education Foundation and are tax deductible.
Donations can be mailed to Pat Austin or David Cook, and checks should be made payable to the Decatur Education Foundation and designated for landscaping school grounds.
In other business, the chamber discussed the details of the upcoming 55 th Annual Decatur Barbecue.
