Fishing derby set for Sept. 6
Posted on Wednesday, August 27, 2008
DECATUR ó Parents will get to spend time with their kids in the great outdoors at the fifth annual community fishing derby on Sept. 6.
The event will be held at Crystal Lake, just north of Decatur, and is sponsored by the Decatur Assembly of God Churchís Big Fisherman / Little Fisherman Community Fishing Program.
Organizer Nickie Smith said fishing is a wonderful way for parents to bond with their kids outdoors. He said he really enjoys fishing with his boys ó who caught their first fish at age 4 ó and started the program to encourage parents to get involved with their kids.
Registration will be from 8: 30 to 9 a. m., and the derby will be from 9 a.m. until noon. There will be five age divisions: 1 ñ 3 year olds, 4 ñ 6 year olds, 7 ñ 9 year olds, 10 ñ 12 year olds and 13 ñ 14 year olds. Each child must be accompanied by an adult to participate.
Prizes will be awarded for the biggest fish, smallest fish and biggest stringer in each age category. A grand-prize drawing will be held for each age group at the end of all division awards, and additional prizes will be awarded as well.
There will be games to play before and during the derby, including a live goldfish grab and Pitch-A-Flip.
A picnic lunch of hot-dogs, chips, dessert and drinks will be served to participants and their families. All of the events are free. The derby is funded entirely by donations and sponsorships, Smith said.
