Polls to remain closed for school’s elections

GENTRY ó A resolution was passed at a special school board meeting Thursday to forgo opening polls for the Sept. 16 annual school election. Because no change in the local millage rate is proposed and only one candidate has filed a petition for election in Zone 2 and no other board positions are open for election this year, the resolution was passed unanimously by board members present to request that polling places not be opened for the election date. - Wednesday, August 27, 2008

‘Show Your Ride’ car show planned

GENTRY ó The first annual Show Your Ride car show is being planned as a part of Gentryís fall festival on Oct. 11. The show, featuring cars, motorcycles, trucks and off-road vehicles, will be held in the city park and is sponsored by the Gentry Fire Department. Proceeds raised from the show will be used to benefit the department. A kidsí division for those 15 and under will include a contest for the bestdecorated bicycle. A model car division is also on the showís agenda. No entry fee is required for the childrenís contests. Prizes and trophies will be awarded to winners. The worldís fastest jet fire truck, ìFirestorm,î will be on display and rides will be given. The show, which will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, is being held in conjunction with other fall festival activities, including an evening Ty Herndon concert, led off with a performance by Arkansas singer Kyla Horton. County nixes short workweek

BENTON COUNTY ó Benton County is no longer considering a four-day workweek for county offices. ìWhen (the proposal for a four-day workweek) came up, there were a lot of pros and cons to it, and we asked for opinions from employees and from folks who live in the county. I was looking for 75 percent of the county to say yes (to the idea), and it was about 50 / 50,î Judge Gary Black said. ìAt this point in time, we are not going to pursue it. I do believe that if the gas crunch keeps going on, and I believe it will, that the state government and the federal government may decide it is smart to shut down for a day.î Many people who offered their opinions on the shortened workweek expressed their concerns that having county offices closed for an additional day would cause the county to be less efficient. Black does not believe that would have been the case, saying a three-day weekend, in his opinion, would give county employees more time with their families and would increase productivity in the workplace.
