LOOKING BACK : 50 years ago: City sets stage for filmstrip producer

50 Years Ago From the Herald and Democrat in 1958 Alfred Devereaux, president of Eye Gate House, New York, visited Siloam Springs in connection with a film strip his company was making.
The subject of the educational color film strip was Small City, U. S. A. and it would feature many pictures of our city.
Eye Gate House was the largest firm producing color film strips in the country, their films were being distributed in about 85, 000 schools across the nation.
In his first visit to Siloam Springs, Devereaux was the guest of Col. Homer Kellems, who was a photography director for the firm.
Kellems had taken photographs for several of the strips, and in one, Consequence, used the high school and main street of Siloam Springs.

A group of city officials and other dignitaries attended the ground breaking at the Highland Shopping Center.
Representatives of the future tenants of the center were present for the occasion.
Firms leasing at the new center were Wal-Mart Discount City, Safeway, C. R. Anthony Co., Coast to Coast Stores, Sears, United Dollar Stores, Phillips 66, a Merle Norman Cosmetics Studio, A & S Mens Store, a laundry, two offices and a restaurant.

Sunday, Aug. 13, 1978, was set as the dedication date for the new Intensive Coronary Care Unit at Siloam Springs Memorial Hospital, according to Ralph Beaty, hospital administrator.
The ceremony was to be held on the parking area west of the hospital beginning at 2 p. m. Rep. Preston Bynum was to be the keynote speaker.
Funds designated for the new ICU construction at Memorial were provided by a private foundation.
During the ceremony recognition was to be given to local industries and organizations that contributed furnishings for the ICU family waiting room and patient lounge and funds which were applied toward furnishings and equipment for patient rooms in the new unit.
Fred Sprunger, Governing Board President, stated that additional equipment could be utilized and that f fund-raising project was being organized.

The Siloam Springs First National Bank legion team opened play in the state tournament in Little Rock with two stunning victories.
On Saturday, Siloam Springs defeated Paragould 9-8, Monday, Jacksonville fell to Siloam Springs 10-8.

Lacie Farley, 13-year-old daughter of Melvin and Denise Farley, was crowned 1998 SSRC Rodeo Queen. Farley also won the horsemanship competition with her horse Little Bit.
Her grandparents are Bob and Ethelyn Farley of Siloam Springs; Pat and Chuck Allen of Springdale and Bob and Louta Bratcher of Salem, Ark.
