THE MURKY DEPTHS : NWA Fishing Report
Posted on Friday, February 22, 2008
Recent downpours were a good thing for area waterways but muddy inflows have slowed the already slow fishing action. Water temps remain in the low 40 s but March is knocking at the door. Good luck and watch for floating debris. Beaver Lake Southtown Sporting Goods - Larry Aggus says the waters have muddied up, turning a fair crappie bite into a downright tough one. Jerkbaits should really come on for bass, especially in the clearer sections of the lake. Crankbaits are also getting some play.
Hook, Line and Sinker in Rogers - Aaron Jolliff says the rivers are mud holes and pretty much everything is shut down. Jerkbaits, crankbaits and spinnerbaits fished in the back of clearing creek arms should bring in a few bass. Hickory Creek Marina - Lee Winkler reports muddy conditions in the rivers. Anglers fishing in front of or behind the mud line will have the best luck. Catfishing might be pretty good as the shad dieoff continues. Beaver Tailwaters - Beaver Dam Store reports water backed up due to Table Rock Lake and wade fisherman are having a difficult time. Colorado spoons (gold / silver, copper / silver ), Rapalas (natural, pink back / orange belly ) and Roostertails (black, yellow, white ) are the top artificials right now. Bait anglers are using Power Bait (yellow, white, orange ), wax worms and night crawlers. The best flies are Cadion midges, Woolly Buggers and Hot Wire Princes.
Lake Sequoyah - Jackie Smith reports high, muddy water. Ron Johnson of Fayetteville brought in a 30-pound blue catfish on chicken liver. Albert Lehman used minnows and caught a 10-pound channel cat. An unconfirmed rumor had a few spoonbills showing up below the dam.
Lake Fayetteville - Jim Black says the water is cold, muddy and void of fish and fishermen.
Bella Vista Lakes - Nick Gann at Hook, Line and Sinker in Bentonville says jigand-pigs are working best in 10 feet or less. A 22-pound stringer won a recent bass tournament and a 9. 35-pound lunker won big bass. Lake Brittany continues to produce good trout action on Little Cleos and Power Bait.
Upper Table Rock Lake - J. D. Fletcher suggests anglers troll long points with Model-A Bombers or similar deep-billed crankbaits. Crappie can be caught in the mouth of coves on minnows or jigs. White bass and walleye are scarce right now.
