Root to celebrate retirement of seven teachers on Sunday Seven teachers from Root Elementary will be honored during a retirement celebration from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the Root School Library. Retiring teachers are: Stephanie Brown, Sari Bottje, Cathy Deweese, Shirley Franklin, Donneliea McNair, Andrea Siroonian and Jan VanSchuyver. Together they have been teaching for more than 100 years. The public is invited. FHS literary magazine receives another national honor The 2007 edition of Connotations, Fayetteville High School's award-winning literary magazine, has garnered another honor, being one of six student literary magazines in the United States to receive the Pacemaker Award from the National Scholastic Press Association at the organization's annual convention in Anaheim, Calif., on April 17-20. Connotations XXIV was edited by Molly Grear and Sarah Miller. Becky Cox is the faculty adviser for the magazine.

Connotations is also a member of the National Scholastic Press Association's Hall of Honor for its repeated success in the national competition. Connotations has also been recognized several times by the National Council of Teachers of English and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Local company donates books to school district Fayetteville-based Budgetext Corp. has donated more than 1, 500 books of various subjects and reading levels to support literacy initiatives in the Fayetteville School District. Special events are being planned that will distribute these books to families and students, including an event to emphasize the importance of reading every day.

"Reading should not end on the last day of school," said Judy New, assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction, assessment and accountability. "Summer reading will keep students interested and involved in worthwhile activities until school begins in August. We hope to put books in the hands of students who might not have access to books during the summer."

These and other projects supporting family literacy are being managed and supported Marian Riner, the coordinator of the district's Families in Transition program.

Christina Ho of Fayetteville was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society at Furman University in Greenville, S. C.

David Noudaranouvong, a senior at Har-Ber High School, has received a $ 10, 000 scholarship from the Walton Family Foundation. He is the son of Vannoukone and Anouthip Noudaranouvong, both employees of the Wal-Mart Optical Lab in Fayetteville.

Five Fayetteville students were recently awarded scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year at Missouri State University in Springfield. Recipients and their awards are Weston Harbaugh, Out of State Fee Waiver; Jessica Harvell, Missouri Outreach Graduate Opportunity Scholarship; Tommye Johnson, Missouri Outreach Graduate Opportunity Scholarship; Nathaniel Lucy, Board of Governors Scholarship and Out of State Fee Waiver; and Parker Watkins, Out of State Fee Waiver.

Matt Mustain of Har-Ber High School was recently awarded the Presidential Academic Scholarship for 2008-09 from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia.

Maegan Huffman of Lincoln High School was one of 254 students nationwide to receive a scholarship through the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation's Dell Scholars Program. Huffman was one of three local participants in the University of Arkansas Upward Bound programs to receive funds. Also receiving funds were Jennifer Garcia of Rogers High School and Sierra McCabe of Van Buren High School. Huffman will attend Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla.

Dell Scholars will receive $ 20, 000 each to continue their higher education for the next six years. The program provides students with technology, resources and mentoring to ensure they have the support they need to obtain a college degree.

Julie Ellenbarger of Har-Ber High School has received a University Scholarship from Arkansas Tech University beginning with the fall 2008 semester. Ellenbarger will graduate with honors and is the daughter of Roland and Gayla Ellenbarger of Springdale.

John Goff, captain of the Seton Hall University College Bowl Team, was named to the tournament All-Star Team. His average of 48. 21 points per game was the fourth-highest average of all competitors. Goff is a senior physics major from Fayetteville. Seton Hall qualified for the College Bowl National Championship at a regional qualifying tournament held at California University of Pennsylvania on Feb. 23-24. Fifteen regional winners and a wild card team were invited to the National Championship Tournament, which was hosted by the University of Southern California.
