40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Thursday, May 9, 1968 Pea Ridge Graphic readers near and far answered the challenge to say what they do and don’t like in the columns of the paper. The poll showed that the most widely read feature in the paper is the front page column, “ Pea Ridge Shellings by the Pea Picken’ Editor. ” About 95 percent of the votes said this column was “ Almost always read. ” “ Letters to the Editor ” ran a close second, running only about two votes behind Pea Ridge Shelling. Tying for third place in the readers’ favorites were “ The Way I Heard It” by Billie Jines and “ Graphically Speaking” (the picture pages ). Nestor and Lucille Nessbaum of Tulsa, Okla., are the new owners of the Pea ridge package Drug Store. The drug store will now be open to serve breakfast.

30 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Wednesday, May 10, 1978 The Annual Benton county Democratic Rally was scheduled for Friday, May 12, with more than 30 candidates for county district, state and federal offices expected to attend. Pea Ridge Day Weekend, proclaimed by Governor David Pryor at the behest of Senator Jim Caldwell, was celebrated in Pea Ridge Saturday with the formal dedication of Pea Ridge Day Memorial Park. The proclamation of “ Pea Ridge Day Weekend” recognized Clyde Day for his contribution to the state and to the game of baseball. It credited him with bringing fame to the now traditional Arkansas hog call, which he frequently employed on and off the pitchers’ mound during his major league baseball career, to the delight of his many fans.

20 Years Ago The Times of Northeast Benton County Wednesday, May 11, 1988 A frame house next to Pea Ridge Baptist Church was intentionally set ablaze Monday evening to permit area fire department personnel to hone their fire fighting skill. Fire departments participation included those from Pea Ridge, Avoca, Little Flock and NEBCO. The Pea Ridge city inspector said he expects that the City Council will approve a resolution May 19 providing for territorial jurisdiction up to five miles from the city limits. Inspector Floyd Blackwell said that the city Planning Commission held a public hearing May 3 at which territorial jurisdiction was the primary topic.

10 Years Ago The Times of Northeast Benton County Thursday, May 7, 1998 Pea Ridge High School’s golf team ended the season ranked seventh in the state in division 1-A, said Coach Perry Mason. Mason said that the Pea Ridge golf program is two years old. Organizers of the 48 th annual Pea Ridge Community Fair, set for July on the Pea Ridge High School campus, said that planning has shifted into high gear and members are hoping to make this one the best fairs ever. General Co-chairpersons Ruth Talburt and Virgie Hazelton said that Beta Alpha chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International Sorority will once again sponsor the fair, as it has done for about 30 years.

The 1998 Pea Ridge Chamber of Commerce Spring Fling was a great success. The proceeds of the breakfast will go to help fund chamber projects, one of which is to bring Christmas decorations back to town.
