Benton and Washington counties have joined together to celebrate the Arkansas 4-H Centennial during this summer event ! 4-H Summer Breeze will be held 6: 30 – 8: 00 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Metroplex Event Center located on U. S. Highway 71 B south of Rogers. Current, former or future 4-H members are invited for games, food, music and more.

4-H got its start in Arkansas in 1908 in White County with the formation of a corn club. While 4-H still offers those early projects, with over 80 projects to choose from today there is something for everyone. 4-H allows youth to learn the basic skills needed to be a productive citizen and a valuable employee in the future. The 4-H experience embodies a sense of responsibility, leadership skills and confidence. When employers comment that they can usually recognize someone who has gone through 4-H, those are the qualities to which they are referring.

Nothing teaches the importance of responsibility more than a 4-H project. Whether it's taking care of an animal, working on environmental issues or sewing, the young person must assume responsibility for making sure the task is not only completed, but completed on time. One of the important lessons learned by taking on a 4-H project is that actions have consequences, as do the lack of actions.

If you are interested in learning more about the 4-H program and the benefits, join members at 4-H Summer Breeze to meet 4-H'ers in Northwest Arkansas and find a local club. They will celebrate the past 100 years and look ahead to what is yet to come !

The Benton and Washington County 4-H Program is the Youth Development program offered by the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service. It is open to all youth ages 5-19 regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, marital or veteran status, or any other legally protected status, and is an Affirmative Action / Equal Opportunity Employer. For information on a 4-H Club, call 271-1060 in Benton county or 444-1755 in Washington county.
