Mikhaela Cochran, fifthgrade trackster, battled swirling wind and barely above freezing temperatures to post a pair of fine efforts in the long jump and 100 meter dash events at the Little Tigers Track Meet in Bentonville Saturday.

Cochran leaped to a season best (12-9 ) in the long jump as well as sprinting to a 15. 1 finish in the 100 meters, both marks being the top ones by a 10-year-old athlete. Overall, her efforts earned her two silver medals as Cochran was barely bested by Bentonville fifth grader Brooke Smith, 11, who jumped 13-0 and 15. 0 to grab first in her age as well as first overall in the two events. The two girls had the best marks of any age at the meet.

The Track'Hawks will be running this Saturday at the opening meet for the 2008 AAU season which will be held in Springdale. Hosted by the Northwest Arkansas Golden Wings Track Club, the meet is one of a series of run-ups to the AAU State Championships which will be held June 13 - 14 in Little Rock. The Golden Wings are coached by former Pea Ridge athlete and current Gentry coach Daniel Ramsey.

Top finishers in Little Rock will go on to Joplin, Mo., for the AAU Region 8 Meet in early July, which will qualify athletes for the 2008 AAU National Championships to be held in Detroit, Mich., in August.
