ELKINS -- The Elkins Planning Commission split its meeting in two parts Monday evening.

The first half of the meeting consisted of a discussion on whether or not to allow a gravel parking area on a possible new storage facility resident Gerald Bowman is considering building.

The city currently has two storage facilities, one with an asphalt driveway and parking area and the other with a gravel parking area. City code states an asphalt driveway and parking area would be have to be laid.

“ If I have to pave it, I may not build it, ” Bowman said.

Planning leader Don Cryder said he was concerned about a potential drainage problem on the northwest corner of the property, which is located behind the Elkhorn Station on Arkansas 16.

“ Gravel would absorb the water better, ” Cryder said.

Commissioner Don Dingledine said he had looked at the property and didn’t have a problem with a gravel parking area.

“ We want what’s best for the city, ” Dingledine said. “ We could end up with a lot of concrete and asphalt. ”

Commissioner Willie McGarrah said she would prefer to look at the property before deciding on the issue.

Chairman Steve Nicholson agreed with McGarrah.

The meeting was adjourned so the two could ride out to the property to view it with Cryder and Bowman.

After returning to the District Court Building, Nicholson called the meeting back to order.

Nicholson said he wasn’t comfortable making a decision without all commissioners present. Jeremy Stevens and Winona Waggoner were absent.

A decision was made to table the issue until the next Planning Commission meeting on May 12 at 7 p. m. at the District Court Building.
