What are the makings of a true friendship ? I believe it is someone who is loyal and honest, someone you can to talk to with the comfort of knowing they really care about your life. A true friendship is never just one sided, many times it requires for you to be the one who is giving comfort instead of just taking. You can have many acquaintances in your life but a real friendship that last a lifetime is very rare. Why ? Because normally the price is too high, it requires too much dedication, too much loyalty and too much respect.
First, let’s look into the life of David and Jonathan, two people who knew what real friendship meant and was willing to help each other in times of need.
1 Samuel 18: 1-4 “ And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle. ” As you read on you will find that Saul had jealousy towards David and wanted to kill him. Jonathan went against his father and protected David from being murder by Saul and his deep loyalty saved David life. Jonathan knew that David needs were greater than his own and he was willing to risk his own life to protect David.
In Exodus 33: 11, we have another example of friendship between God and Moses, “ And the Lord spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle. ” Moses desired to see God and speak to Him, he found true friendship in God’s presence and Moses knew that God would never leave him and he followed the Lord all the days of his life.
And our last example is found in John 15: 15, “ Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. ” This is the greatest friendship in the world, the Bible says Jesus is someone who will stick closer than a brother. But first you have to ask yourself are you doing your part ? Have you given your life to Jesus ? Have your confessed all your sins by asking for forgiveness and letting Him come into your life.
John 15: 13, “ Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. ” Jesus freely laid down His life so that you could have eternity. What a great sacrifice, what great love that He must have for you. My words could never speak well enough to glorify all that He has done for the world and yet the world beat him and spit upon him and he still went to the cross for all to be saved. I know that is true love and true friendship and maybe everything else in the world will pass away but His great love will always be there to fill the brokenhearted and bring new life to all who ask.
