Winslow Remembered
To the Editor: Dear Mr. Trent, thank you for the fine article about the Winslow School Building in the White River Valley News! It was my happy privilege to have taught there in 1939. I had 63 schoolchildren in grades one, two and three! (They did not all attend every day.) The "school bus" was a station wagon driven by Henry Mills. The "old gym" had a wood burning heating stove, but the basketball games kept us all warm! For my efforts at teaching I was paid $50.00 monthly. At that time, Devil’s Den State Park was a CCC camp with 200 young men. It was there that I met my husband, who was the mess sergeant at that CCC camp. We were married in December that year, and observed our 62 nd wedding anniversary before I lost him in 2001. He went from Devil’s Den to St. Louis College of Pharmacy, with time out to serve three years in the Navy during WWII. He finished pharmacy college in June 1947.
We returned to Winslow and to Devil’s Den as often as we could. It has become a talisman in my life, and I am there as often as I can get there.
I continue to see many of those I taught that year, and all of them are dear to my heart.
Thank you for your interesting account of the present use of the Winslow School Building.
Sincerely,

To the Editor: I want to thank you and your staff for printing a good paper, but what makes it a real good paper is Leonard Dunn’s column every week.
I especially liked his skit last week about his dogs. It showed he is compassionate and loves his animals like he is supposed to do.
The only way his columns could be any better would be for them to be longer.
His column is the very first thing I read when I buy your paper.
Sincerely,
Robert L. Adams
