Students celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday

St. Paul Elementary School students celebrated Dr. Seuss' 50 th birthday March 2 by doing something fun in honor of the author. Fifth and sixth graders celebrated by having their own reading café. They had hot chocolate and cookies and brought a variety of creative things to decorate the tables for their café.
Signs advertising the cafes were posted outside Mrs. Anita Lawrence's sixth grade room and Ms. Kim Gulledge's fifth grade classroom. Mrs. Lawrence's class named their café the Starburst Café," Where reading is a blast."
Ms. Gulledge's class named their cafe, Café Choc-olate," Where reading and eating are combined with a relaxing atmosphere and aroma of chocolate."
St. Paul Principal Will Pittman came and read to the sixth grade class. Each class had a quiet and fun-filled afternoon before their Iowa Tests of Basic Skills started.
Mrs. Bonnie Rodgers' class, however, did something a little different.
The class read the book," Bartholomew and the Oobleck," and then actually created oobleck from a recipe Mrs. Rodgers' discovered while she was working on her master's degree. Small groups of students took turns experiencing oobleck by immersing their hands into the interesting-feeling green mixture.
First graders also colored a Dr. Seuss picture, and Mrs. Rodgers read a Dr. Seuss biography out loud.
Ethel McComas brought a Dr. Seuss book to read to the first grade class, and St. Paul PTSA members made the day even more fun by bringing balloons for each student.
"Each elementary class celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday differently, but they all had fun," Ms. Rodgers said.
